3 Reasons To Give San Diego Musical Theater Auditions a Try

 In San Diego Broadway Shows

There are some people who know from a very young age that musical theater is all they want to do. They take acting classes, dance classes, and voice lessons for years, all in the hopes of getting on stage regularly. They see every musical they can, both live and pre-recorded. They can sing lyrics to the most obscure Broadway musicals and knew the words to every Hamilton song the week after the musical came out. Every chance they get, they’re going to San Diego musical theater auditions in hopes of moving up through the ranks and becoming a star.

Is that you? If not, you’re in good company. There are many, many people who have an interest in being in live theater in San Diego even if they know it’s not their life’s calling. Some people are only familiar with the most famous musicals — Fiddler on the Roof, West Side Story, or Les Miserables — but still have a desire to spend some of their time on stage.

If that’s you, and you’ve got the talent to bring to the stage, we think it’s time you audition with us. While San Diego Musical Theater is of a higher caliber than smaller community theaters, we still have open auditions for locals.

But are you really ready to audition? What’s holding you back? Here are a few reasons it might be time to kick it up a notch and come in to audition.

You’ll Have More Experience Auditioning

While you might know that you want to tread the boards and be in a Broadway musical here in San Diego, you’d probably rather perform than audition. But auditioning is a necessary part of the process, even though few actors and dancers ever want to do it. Auditions seldom allow a person to show everything they’re capable of, and the entire process has brought low quite a few talented people.

Like acting, auditioning is a skill. It’s something you have to do again and again so that you can get better at it. You might not land a role from your first audition with our live theater program, but you will have more experience. And if you embarrass yourself, remember that it’s happened to absolutely every actor out there! It’s all part of the process.

You Gotta Start Somewhere!

If your audition goes well, maybe you’ll be cast. In that case, congratulations! We certainly can’t take everyone who auditions for our San Diego Broadway musicals, so you’re among a select few. (And if you weren’t cast, come back to audition next time.)

If you come in thinking you’ll get the lead and end up getting the chorus, don’t be surprised. Even if you had a perfect audition, it’s important to remember that the audition isn’t the only thing we have to make our decisions on. If we have someone who did just as well as you and has been in a dozen of our performance, we might choose them (a known quantity who has never missed a rehearsal) over someone we just met on audition day.

Who Knows…You Might Be Just What We Need!

There’s always the chance that you’re the golden child, of course. Maybe you’ve been an accountant all your life but have the voice of Michael Crawford in his prime. If so, we hope you’ll audition, because we’d love to discover you!

Are You Ready To Give It A Go?

If you’ve decided that you’re ready to get up on stage and show us what you’ve got, we invite you to audition with us. As we write this article, we’re having auditions for A Christmas Story and would love to see you audition. Click that link to find out more about it!
