SDMT Board Member Spotlight – Meet Joanie Hastings!
Meet Joanie Hasting, SDMT Newest Board Member and the second in our new SDMT Board Member Spotlight series, a series created to introduce our wonderful board members! We interviewed Joanie to find out why she joined SDMT’s board, her favorite SDMT production and her personal message of why donating to SDMT is important to her!
How did you become acquainted with SDMT?
Cinda Lucas introduced my husband and me to SDMT. We were hooked after our first show. We loved everything about the experience!
Why did you want to become a member of the board?
I was looking for a new way to give back to the community, and this seemed like a good fit.
When did you join the SDMT board?
My first introduction to the board was the first meeting of the pandemic, so I suppose you could say that I’m a pandemic board member. So far I’ve only met the other board members (besides Cinda) by Zoom, so I’m really looking forward to the time when we can meet in person!
What has been your favorite SDMT production?
I loved “She Loves Me.” I wasn’t familiar with the play until I saw SDMT make it come alive. The story was fun, the acting and music were wonderful, and the costumes were just right.
Why should friends, co-workers, family members, community members, etc. contribute to your SDMT fundraising campaign?
The Sound of Music. My Fair Lady. Rent. Fiddler on the Roof. Chicago. Avenue Q. If you’re like me, you read these titles, and immediately song lyrics start running through your head. And, if you’re not in a place where you might embarrass yourself, you might even hear yourself start singing some of the tunes out loud. I love musical theatre, and seeing it live is always exciting. That’s why I am proud to serve on the board of San Diego Musical Theatre. San Diego Musical Theatre is a local theatre company started by a local family. Their professional productions are Broadway quality—the acting, music, costumes, and sets are fantastic. Gary and I can’t wait until they are able to once again have actors on stage delighting audiences. Not only does SDMT offer professional theatre, they are also a fantastic resource for young stars in training through their Academy. The SDMT Academy offers classes for all ages in acting, dance, production, and much more. As the parent of a now grown-up “theatre kid,” I wish I had known about SDMT when Ryan was younger. Like so many arts programs, SDMT is looking to fill gaps in their financial outlook during this time when theatres are dark and our musical theatre experience is limited to television and Zoom. I am proud to be a supporter. If you love musical theatre like I do, I hope you’ll join me in supporting SDMT!
