#BehindtheCurtain: Get to Know Jasmine January
If you’ve had the chance to see our current production of “Anything Goes”, running February 10th to March 12th, then you’ll know first hand the star who is Jasmine January. Portraying the loveable and comedic Erma Latour, Jasmine brings a level of charm that will have audiences swooning just like the sailors do over Erma’s character in the show. Having previously performed in our production of “Sister Act”, Jasmine is no stranger to the SDMT Stage, and we’re thrilled to have her back. Keep reading below to get to know this amazingly talented individual before you get to see her work in action this weekend on the SDMT Stage!
What inspired you to get into musical theatre?
To be honest, I got into Musical Theatre so randomly! My grandparents thought it’d be fun for me to audition for a show they had heard about, with a youth company. For my first theater experience, I ended up playing Scarecrow in The Wiz! It was so fun and I’ve been hooked ever since!
Does the show “Anything Goes” have any special meaning to you?
Yes! My first lead role in undergrad was Hope Harcourt! It was a very special moment for me and this show will always remind me of that moment.
If you were on a cruise, who’s the one celebrity you’d want to see and talk with on board?
Rihanna of course!
Who is your Broadway idol?
I have a few, but I would have to pick Cynthia Erivo!
What is your dream role?
Such a hard question! Maybe Chicago’s Roxie Hart!
What’s your favorite scene in the show?
My favorite scene might be Reno and Evelyn’s! When she tries to seduce him, he’s completely oblivious! It always makes me laugh.
What’s something most people don’t know about you?
I think most people don’t know that I actually used to be a pageant girl, and that’s the whole reason I even started singing. I didn’t even think I was good at it, I just knew it was fun to tell a story through song.
If you weren’t an actress, what would you want to be?
I have no idea! Maybe a therapist ?! Or a food blogger! Haha
