#BehindtheCurtain: Get to Know Mauricio Mendoza

“When you’re an Addams, you have to have a lot of passion”, and Gomez Addams truly embodies this sentiment to the fullest! As the leader of his dark and interesting family, Gomez is constantly torn between his love for his wife and that for the rest of his family- especially his daughter, Wednesday. In our production, Mauricio Mendoza, who is making his SDMT debut, brings such energy and life to this iconic character. As a seasoned performer of both stage and screen, Mauricio utilizes this wealth of experience and it truly shows. In a musical all about family, having Mauricio as our Gomez is made even more special due to the fact that his brother Carlos is the director! Following their incredible examples, the love and sincerity of what it means to be part of a family flows through our production, and it’s a performance you won’t want to miss. What inspired you to get into musical theatre?

I have my twin brother Carlos to thank! He would always convince me to do shows with him which is the way I initially got involved. That’s also exactly what happened for this show! It’s always so special to share this space and this process with him.

Does The Addams Family have any special meaning to you? If you could tell the audience anything about this show, what would it be?

This show definitely means a lot to me because of an actor closely connected to it. Raul Julia is my favorite actor, and he played Gomez in both of the film versions; The Addams Family & Addams Family Values. Connecting to this character and honoring Raul’s memory as I do so, has been so special. As for what I would tell the audience… this show is a fun, family friendly show that can be shared by all.

Who is your Broadway idol?

The late Raul Julia who inspired me to become the kind of actor/performer I am today.

What is your favorite scene or number in The Addams Family?

I’d have to “Happy/Sad” – because I have a daughter and I know how it feels to be happy and sad while you watch your daughter grow up into a beautiful young woman.

This show centers around a wild and wonderful family and all their crazy antics. Do you have any funny or wild family stories you’d like to share… full disclosure!

Not really……. though growing up in a family of five brothers… enough said!

What is a dream role or dream show to be in for you?

That’s an easy answer for sure: Don Quixote in Man of La Mancha!

If you could invite one member of the Addams family to meet your own family, who would you want to bring for dinner?

Gomez for sure, he is the life of the party!
