Musical Theatre Stats That You Probably Didn’t Know

 In San Diego Broadway Shows

There’s been a lot of talk lately about the live arts dwindling away.

“They just don’t make them like they used to,” they say. “Nobody likes to go to the theatre anymore,” another adds.

Well what you may not know is that musical theatre is actually alive, well, and thriving like never before.

Thanks to the mainstream popularity of musicals like Hamilton, The Book of Mormon, Dear Evan Hansen, and others, the growth of musical theatre has helped to inspire the next generation of performing artists.

And we couldn’t be more excited about it!

Here at San Diego Musical Theatre, we would like to continue passionately producing and providing the type of professional musical theatre that captivates audiences, ignites the human spirit, and brings all of the thoughts and feelings that art always has.

Ever since the curtains first opened at our theatre in 2006, we have aimed to inspire and entertain. This is the new golden age of musical theatre, and we want to share it with you!

Attendance

Visitors of live theatre performances are actually on the rise in the United States.

According to Statista, more than 47,460,000 people visited live theatres in the spring of 2017 — more than five million more who saw a live theatre show in 2012.

At San Diego Musical Theatre, our historic 200-seat venue has housed more than 101,000 fans of our own since 2006.

Employment

For many, musical theatre is nothing more than a form of entertainment or a hobby. For others, musical theatres is actually a way of life.

Statista estimates that more than 96,000 artists are employed by non-profit professional theatres all across the United States, helping to grow and encourage the arts.

Locally, San Diego Musical Theatre has provided opportunities for more than 800 artists to hit the stage and live out their dream — whether as an actress, a dancer, a stage producer, or another role entirely.

Live theatre helps make dreams into a reality!

Performances And Theatres

The prevalence of non-profit professional theatres has increased over the years as well. According to a 2005 study by the National Endowment for the Arts, the amount of not-for-profit theatres in the United States doubled from 1990-2005 — and those numbers have only continued to grow.

That has led to more opportunity for performing artists and those who enjoy live musicals as entertainment.

Since opening in 2006, shortly after the study was produced, the San Diego Musical Theatre has put on more than 350 performances — a mixture of both professional and pre-professional — while receiving a number of awards and distinctions.

As you can see, the magic of live musical theatre shows no signs of fading or dwindling.
