In Blog, San Diego Broadway Shows

Musicals have a way of transporting you to another place and time in a way that films and other plays don’t. When you see any of these five Broadway shows, you’ll enjoy the culture, theatrics, and personality each one brings to the stage. At San Diego Musical Theatre, we’re always offering musical productions you’ll love, so get San Diego theater tickets today!

“Les Misérables”

When it comes to musical theater, there aren’t too many people out there who haven’t heard of “Les Misérables.” The French historical novel by Victor Hugo was first published in 1862, and the musical premiered in Paris in 1980. Since then, the Broadway musical has graced theaters all over the world, with even more widespread fame after the 2012 film starring Anne Hathaway, Hugh Jackman, Russell Crowe, Eddie Redmayne, Amanda Seyfried, and other notable actors.

“Mamma Mia”

This 1999 production is near the top of all Broadway musical lists, and for good reason: the musical is based on hit songs by ABBA, and it’s full of rhythm, color, and energy from start to finish. “Mamma Mia” was made even more popular with the 2008 film starring Meryl Streep, Colin Firth, Amanda Seyfried, and other A-list stars, and the recent “Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again” seems to be on everyone’s minds right now as they check in on Donna and Sophie years later.

“Hairspray”

It doesn’t get much better than a big girl with big hair and a big personality in Maryland in the 1960s. “Hairspray” has stayed incredibly relevant throughout the years, and was also adapted into a 2007 film starring John Travolta, Zac Efron, and many other recognizable stars. Even better, from Aug. 3 to Sept. 2, you can catch this Broadway show in San Diego. Broadway shows in San Diego are always a blast, and you can make the perfect date night out of it.

“Hamilton”

From St. Croix in the 1760s to New York in the 1770s to modern musical theatre in the 21st century, “Hamilton” has it all. This 2015 Broadway show full of history, discussion on race, and, of course, rap, is the brainchild of Lin-Manuel Miranda, and audiences the world over have lost their collective minds over the creativity and high energy of the musical. A film adaptation is in the works, but you’ll have to wait for it.

“Young Frankenstein”

This musical will have you laughing from beginning to end as you get a glimpse into the genius mind of Mel Brooks. Follow Dr. Frederick Frankenstein as he inherits his grandfather’s estate in Transylvania and soon begins experiments of his own. “Young Frankenstein” began as a movie starring Gene Wilder in 1974, as was first performed as a musical in 2007. Catch this San Diego Broadway show with us from Sept. 28 to Oct. 28 — you’ll have a monstrously good time.
